In December, the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board launched a “Cars to Work” program in Dickenson County using a $50,000 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant from the county’s Board of Supervisors. In addition, the SWVA WDB is planning to expand the program into Tazewell County using a $100,000 ARPA grant from its Board of Supervisors.
The “Cars to Work” program will provide a no-interest loan (max $5,000) payable over 24 months. The payable portion of the loan is half the amount borrowed; for example, if a loan is $5,000, only $2,500 is paid back. If an individual doesn’t use the entire $5,000, the program can pay tax, tags, and titling fees, not exceeding the $5,000 limit. The proceeds from these loans will funnel back into the program to provide more cars to needy individuals. One individual has received a vehicle so far, and two more are in progress.
This program is available for Dickenson County residents that have an income at or below 150% of the Federal poverty guideline. They must also have a clean driving record to qualify. For more information, please contact the SWVA Works – Haysi office at (276) 880-5611 or (276) 698-5712.
Please watch for updates regarding the launch of the program in Tazewell County!
